High blood pressure is the second biggest risk factor for premature death and disability in this country. Yet it can often be prevented through lifestyle change. Currently of every 10 adults in England with high blood pressure, only four are both diagnosed and controlled. Addressing this is a huge opportunity both to reduce avoidable mortality and save money in the NHS and social care. Supported by a new national programme on tackling high blood pressure (led by Public Health England), a group of partners in the South West are hosting this workshop to address these issues locally. This workshops is co-hosted with the South West Cardiovascular Strategic Clinical Network, Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Devon, South Gloucestershire and Swindon.

We are delighted to invite you to join this action planning and learning workshop. The theme for the day is hypertension prevention, both primary and secondary. The morning will include a briefing on high blood pressure, including local performance data, sessions on promoting behaviour change, exploring achievements and challenges in local blood pressure prevention work, and explaining the role of the NHS Health Check in preventing hypertension. The afternoon will have a greater clinical focus on blood pressure management in practice, shining a spotlight on multi-morbidity, particularly hypertension and diabetes, as well as include a panel discussion and Q&A, and supported local action planning. Speakers will include Dr Matt Kearney, Practising GP and founding member of the Primary Care CVD Leadership Forum and Jamie Waterall, National Lead for the NHS Health Check Programme. Registration and coffee will be from 09:30 to 09:55 and the workshop will run from 10:00 to 16:00. The workshop will take place at Somerset County Cricket Club, Saint James Street, Taunton, Somerset TA1 1JT. To view the programme and to book your place, please visit the workshop website. We hope we can look forward to welcoming you and to a very interesting day. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the workshop, please send an email to events@phe.gov.uk.
